Hijab Controversy-Amasa Firdaus

She was the embattled law graduate from the university of Ilorin that was denied entrance into the International Conference Centre Abuja, the venue for the call to bar programme for refusal to remove her hijab on 12th of December, 2017.

According to the body of Benchers and Nigerian Law School, Amasa’s hijab broke their dress codes and she was eventually not call to bar. She refused to remove her hijab and stood for what she believed in. According to her, forcing her to remove her hijab was a violation of her human right by denying her from being inducted as a barrister with her other colleagues.

This scenario generated a lot of controversies in Nigeria and globally. According to  Dr Joe Abah, a former Director-General of the Bureau of Public Service Reforms in Nigeria and past president of the Nigerian Bar Association Mahmoud Abubakar are of the opinion that  Amasa should have been called to bar regardless of her hijab. The problem of the Nigeria legal profession are numerous and how those problems would be tackle should be the ultimate priority not focusing on hijab worn discretely under a wig- source: the Guardian news

Amasa firdaus was eventually call to bar on july 10, 2018, seven months after her denial. She was actually used to pave way for other muslimah graduates coming behind her to be able to use the hijab to their call to bar ceremony.

The lesson we are to learn from this short article is that  when you stand by what you believe in and you are steadfast (Istiqamah) then the truth will always prevail. There are a lot of reward in being steadfast in your faith and believing and trusting in Allah alone.
